Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.
What: Shares of NV Energy (NYSE: NVE ) jumped 23% today after the company agreed to be bought out by Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK-B ) .
So what: Berkshire's MidAmerican subsidiary has made the offer to purchase NV Energy for $23.75 per share, and both board have approved the deal. If all goes well, it is expected to close in the first quarter of next year.
Now what: This is the latest major move into energy for Berkshire Hathaway as Warren Buffett looks to add consistent cash flow from the utility business. The move adds 2.4 million electric customers to the company and natural gas services to 145,000 people. Shares are trading within $0.10 of the offer price, and Berkshire isn't one to get into a bidding war, so I think now is a great time to sell NV Energy and cash out on today's pop.

LINN continues to chip away at their portfolio transformation, announcing asset sales in the Granite Wash and Permian basin which will fund their recent Devon Energy (DVN) deal and continue to strengthen their balance sheet as well as lower their overall decline rate. We expect additional moves to come as LINN looks to fully exit their Permian Midland basin position, which should facilitate further M&A. All that is positive, but we are also updating our model for a revised commodity deckiven the shift in oil prices, we now push back our distribution growth assumption to early 2017, which lowers our target price by a dollar to $34 which still supports a solid total return outlook. We note that upside to our M&A expectations could bring distribution growth to investors sooner than this.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By James E. Brumley]
Had Samson Oil & Gas Limited (NYSEMKT:SSN) made the late-July surge and subsequent early-August pullback and then gotten stuck in the mud again, I might not even bother taking a look at it. That's not how it happened though. Since the pullback, SSN has perked up again, perhaps not as hot as it was with the initial rally at the end of last month, but more than hot enough to get my attention. I suspect another surge - perhaps a longer-lasting surge - is in the cards.

Onshore, my favorite play is the Utica Shale, in which my top plays are Gulfport Energy Corp. (GPOR) and Rex Energy Corp. (REXX). Both companies have highly economic acreage, solid balance sheets and industry-leading production growth. I also like Rex Energy for its likely production upside. Another one of my favorite plays is the Eagle Ford Shale, in which my top plays are Penn Virginia Corp. (PVA) and Sanchez Energy Corp. (SN). Both have core acreage in the region, improving operating results and experienced management. Another favorite name of mine is Midstates Petroleum Co. Inc. (MPO). The company has assets in three solid plays and a management team with a long successful track record. Those are my favorite names at this time.

Bottom Line
Phillips' comments come on the heels of similar comments two weeks ago from Energy Transfer Partners (NYSE: ETP ) CEO Kelcy Warren, who said, "You're going to see the resumption of some kind of M&A strategy that we deliberately shelved for quite a period now." The floodgates have officially opened. Investors should pay close attention to new acquisitions. Where are the new assets, what are they, and will they complement your MLP's existing footprint? They are all important questions to ask as the shopping spree begins.
