Top 5 Income Stocks To Invest In 2014

Matt Sayles/AP Celebrities don't make the best financiers. Several years ago, a handful famous people jumped into the prepaid debit card business, only to find it wasn't quite the easy route to profits they might have believed it to be. Perhaps they were under that impression because, to coin an old phrase, the financial sector is where the money is. But succeeding in it can be much trickier than it looks. Fed by All Those Fees It's easy to understand why the prepaid card market would be appealing for someone looking for a good side business. In a word: fees. Using a prepaid card generates a raft of payouts for the customer. These can include activation fees, monthly subscription fees, loading fees, ATM withdrawal fees (not to mention ATM balance inquiry fees), customer service fees ... and on and on. How can card issuers tack on so many costs to a simple financial instrument? After all, a typical credit or debit card using the Visa (V) or MasterCard (MA) network carries few if any fees for the user. But prepaid cards are targeted towards a different kind of customer -- lower-income individuals, and those who can have a difficult time securing financial instruments (such as teenagers). Many of these folks lack the income or credit score for a traditional credit card and might not have the means to satisfy the requirements of a traditional bank account. In other words, since they have limited options, as a group these individuals are virtually a captive market for prepaid products. I'd Just Like an Autograph Instead, Thanks

Compared to other gold miners, Barrick Gold (ABX) and Newmont Mining (NEM) haven’t gotten much love from investors this year.

    Associated Press

Shares of Newmont Mining have gained 3.2% so far this year, while Barrick Gold has risen 4.8%, even as the SPDR Gold ETF (GLD) has gone up 8.6% and the Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (GDX) has advanced 16%.

Credit Suisse analysts Anita Soni and Robert Reynolds still rate Newmont Mining and Barrick Gold shares Neutral, but turned more positive on the companies’ share prices today. They explain why they raised their price target on Barrick Gold…

Our ]target price] increases to US$21 as we raise our [net-asset value] multiple to 1.60x (from 1.20x) to reflect [Barrick Gold's] relatively conservative $1,100/oz gold price assumption for reserves, exploration upside potential within its asset base (demonstrated by its 15Moz Goldrush discovery) and strong base of low cost assets. Our [Operating Cash Flow] is reduced for FY15 to $1.17/sh (from $1.58/sh) as we model higher sustaining capex and corporate spending than previously.

    …and on Newmont Mining:

Our [Newmont Mining] TP increases to US$26 (from US$21) on higher forecast OpCFa and a higher NAV target multiple. Our OpCFa for FY14/15 on average increased to $1.80 (from $1.40) onhigher production and lower costs in 2015 than our prior forecast, now reflecting guidance. Our NAV declined to $14.83/sh (from $18.92/sh), primarily on Nevada (less reserves and higher CS cost est.) and Ahafo (higher CS cost est.). Our target NAV multiple is raised to 1.50x, at a slight discount to peer [Barrick Gold] (1.60x).

A resolution of the ore export ban in Indonesia is necessary to become more constructive on [Newmont Mining], as the strong 2015/2016 FCF would provide [Newmont Mining] with additional balance sheet flexibility to pursue value accretive project development, or external M&A. Top 10 Healthcare Equipment Companies To Buy For 2014

Last Friday when yours truly suggested MeetMe Inc. (NYSEMKT:MEET) shares were taking flight and were a "buy", I didn't aim to imply it was going to be the next Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ:FB) or LinkedIn Corp. (NYSE:LNKD). It was just a short-term idea assuming the near-term technical clues would get traction. Today's action from MEET seals that deal.

Just for anyone not familiar with the company, comparing LNKD or FB to MeetMe may be comparing, well, not apples to oranges, but red apples to green apples. MEET is a social networking side that groups potential and current friends according to their current geographical location rather than a circle of friends, family, or coworkers. It's specifically designed to facilitate meeting new friends for strictly-social purposes, as opposed to LinkedIn, which is aimed at professional introductions, and Facebook, which caters to connect users with people they already know.

www.take2games.com Sometimes, the right answer when a potential suitor appears before you on bended knee is "Yes." But there's been no shortage of attractive offers getting spurned on Wall Street. Sometimes those offers just don't make sense: Boards aren't ready to sell; shareholders think their stock is worth more, and vote down the deals. AstraZeneca (AZN) recently became the latest big company to refuse a suitor's advances. Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer (PFE) was shot down last week after making a $117 billion offer for AstraZeneca. Pfizer claims that was its final offer; apparently, it wasn't enough. Sometimes, those disinterested companies are better off on their own. However, for every Facebook (FB) that correctly scoffed at a large figure (offered $1 billion, it's worth north of $150 billion today), there are many companies that lived to regret turning down. Here are five companies whose owners really should have taken the money and run. Circuit City Circuit City is gone. The consumer electronics superstore chain filed for bankruptcy, liquidating all of its stores in 2009. It didn't have to go out that way. There was no shortage of companies proposing to take over the once-vibrant retailer. It turned down private equity firms that wanted to pay $8 a share in 2003 and then $17 a share in 2005. Blockbuster Video -- yes, that Blockbuster -- even started to make buyout overtures in 2008. Blockbuster was hoping that teaming up with Circuit City would create "an $18 billion retail enterprise uniquely positioned for the convergence of media content and electronic devices." It never panned out. Circuit City was out of business less than a year later. Take-Two Interactive (TTWO) Weeks before Take-Two Interactive's "Grand Theft Auto IV" hit stores in 2008, Electronic Arts (EA) initiated a hostile takeover. It offered to pay $26 a share for Take-Two, but with the game expected to set industry sales records (which it eventually did), there was little reason

Alamy They're "the gift most everyone buys for the holidays," according to USA Today. This holiday season alone, nearly 81 percent of shoppers will buy at least one gift card -- totaling nearly $30 billion, according to the National Retail Federation. The benefits of buying gift cards are clear: They make great last-minute gifts (in a way that seems more personal than cash) and they vastly reduce the odds of you getting someone something just don't want or will never use. In fact, the percentage of consumers who made a holiday return has plummeted over the past few years as gift card purchases rose, according to data from America's Research Group. But if you're not careful, these gift cards could end up leaving you -- or your giftee -- with less money than you thought. Hidden Fees and Dates Recent changes to federal law have made gift cards even more consumer-friendly. For example, gift cards must now remain valid for five years. This law has worked as intended -- the amount unused on gift cards now only totals 1 percent of total sales ... down from 6.4 percent just four years ago, according to CEB TowerGroup. But this unused amount still totals more than $1 billion each year. To make sure your gift card purchase (or receipt) isn't included among these sunk costs, here are some tips to remember whether you're on the giving or receiving end of a gift card this year. If You Are Purchasing a Gift Card: 1. Stick to buying store-branded gift cards. Bankrate.com's annual Gift Card Survey uncovered that the major gift cards offered through banks and credit card companies (generic Visa (V) or American Express (AXP), for example) charged either purchase fees or maintenance/inactivity fees (or both). On the other hand, only a small handful of store-branded cards reviewed carried similar fees. 2. Send either an e-gift card or purchase the gift card in store. Many gift cards (even store-branded ones) carry purchase fees disguised as "delivery fees." For example,

A quick search of ticket prices for the latest Broadway show or major band or pop star tour coming through town shows why. But before resigning yourself to watching yet another series on Netflix (NFLX), consider some of these frugal alternatives and savings strategies. Check the community calendar. From outdoor concert series in the summer to dramatic readings of Shakespeare at the local library, the amount of free and affordable live entertainment programming being offered by communities is fantastic. A quick web search of your town followed by the words "event calendar" is sure to yield a variety of results and options. T-VEC is not your traditional biologic drug. Despite its promise and intriguing mechanism of action, T-VEC is not in further development at Amgen. However, Oncolytics (NASDAQ: ONCY  ) has shown promising results for its bioengineered form of reovirus called Reolysin. With this in mind, I feel it'd be prudent of biotech-savvy investors to give Oncolytics Biotech (NASDAQ: ONCY  ) a closer look.

    The big risks
I'm quite aware that there are a lot factors that'd raise a red flag with Oncolytics. Similar to Affymax, you could say that Oncolytics has put all of its eggs in one basket with its lead experimental drug, reolysin. Best Defensive Stocks To Invest In 2014

The second quarter saw a sharp spike in interest rates, which caused havoc in the mortgage REIT sector. As inevitable book value losses became the norm, it became a question of which mREIT could get away with the least damage.

Hatteras Financial (NYSE: HTS  ) was one of the worst performers during the period despite following a relatively conservative strategy of investing mostly in adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM) mortgage-backed securities, as opposed to fixed-rate 30-year MBSes that can often carry a larger interest rate risk.

How bad was it?
Hatteras reported EPS of $0.66 for the quarter, a rise of $0.04 per share over the previous quarter. The company's net interest spread dropped by 18 basis points from Q1 to 0.93% as its Constant Prepayment Rate (CPR) jumped to 20.8% -- the highest in almost two years. However, the real shock came in the form of a steep drop in book value, which fell to $22.18 from $28.18 in Q1 -- a drop of 21%.

This is bad by any standard, but what makes it even worse is that Hatteras is known to have a relatively defensive portfolio when compared to its fixed-rate focused peers; at the end of the second quarter, ARMs comprised almost 89% of Hatteras' MBS portfolio. Capstead Mortgage (NYSE: CMO  ) , a mortgage REIT that follows a similar strategy of investing in ARMs, reported that its book value per share declined by just 3.8% because of market price movements.

Advisors' Opinion:

Despite economic and political turmoil, equity markets performed well across the board in September of 2013 and over the trailing twelve months. The September gains reversed losses in August and also resulted in positive overall quarterly performance with a number of major indexes moving further into record territory. After disturbing the markets in May and June with comments that they may taper Quantitative Easing (QE), the Fed surprised investors with an announcement that it would not reduce its asset purchases in the near-term. The announcement removed fears that a continued rise in interest rates may stall the economic recovery, as seen by the market's negative reaction to the sharp rise in the 10-year Treasury rate in August of 2013. Investors were also comforted by improving fundamentals both domestically and abroad. The Eurozone may finally be emerging from its prolonged recession and a number of economic reports in the U.S. continue to show progress. Specifically, initial unemployment claims dropped to a multiyear low early in September and the housing market continued to improve, as evidenced by prices rising 12.4 percent year-over year, which along with the stock market's strength, has created a positive wealth effect for consumers. In response to this general economic improvement, consumer confidence increased at the end of September, and the index of leading economic indicators ticked up as well, suggesting that, absent the effects of politics, the recovery in the real economy was continuing. Our portfolios that focus on corporate restructuring (Keeley Small Cap Value, Keeley Small-Mid Cap Value, Keeley Mid Cap Value, Keeley All Cap Value, and Keeley Alternative Value) have all experienced a productive investment cycle with respect to their opportunity sets, and many of our holdings have posted impressive results in recent quarters. Last week, the headlines reporting the U.S. Census Bureau's construction numbers for November were a little alarming. Overall construction spending fell 03% -- a big deal for this particular industry -- suggesting heavy construction stocks like MasTec, Inc. (NYSE:MTZ) and Granite Construction Inc. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Charles Santerre]

If the Lumia 925 and 928 have a derivative design, the same can be said for the complete line of Galaxy Series by Samsung (SSNLF.PK) and iPhones by Apple (AAPL). If there is one quality Nokia is still renowned for, it is for its beautiful and sturdy designs. I have even criticized them in an earlier article entitled Nokia's Challenger Checklist for spending too much on quality in their handsets while it does not seem to be such a high priority for their competitors. In any event, the Lumia 925 has not yet been released, so it's too soon to obtain real feedback. The 928 has only been available for three weeks now. To date the average rating on Amazon is 4.5 stars out of 5.

  • [By Ashraf Eassa]

Next, it is interesting to note that Samsung (SSNLF.PK) recently announced a device called the "Galaxy Tab 3 Kids", which is an Android based competitor to the LeapPad product line in the sense that it comes layered with a UI specifically targeted for children much in the same way that the LeapPad Ultra is. Of course, LeapFrog will (rightly) argue that its application ecosystem is more robust on the education side of things, but this is the sort of disruption - particularly by general purpose hardware - that can eventually spell disaster in the long run, particularly as a player like Samsung (which often in-sources many of its own parts) can drive prices down while maintaining reasonable margins and forcing out the smaller more niche players in a given space.

  • [By George Kesarios]

So in the prepaid market, surprisingly enough, Apple has actually scored points, despite the fact that it's a high-end high priced device maker. LG however is probably the biggest winner, because NPD tells us it doubled its market share, while Samsung (SSNLF.PK) has remained in the number one position having retained its market share. The biggest surprise of all however is that Nokia (NOK) is not on this list.

Job creation last month was shockingly weak, but analysts couldn't really explain why –- other than to blame the weather -- which left investors unsure how to react Friday. Many analysts say the numbers are likely to be revised higher next month, and in the end, market reaction was muted. The Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI) lost ground for a third straight day, declining nearly 8 points, but the Standard & Poor's 500 index (^GPSC) added 4, and the Nasdaq composite index (^IXIC) rose 18 points. Target (TGT) lost more than a point after saying the data breach that began on Black Friday was much worse than previously thought. The company now says as many as 70 million customers had personal information stolen. Target also lowered its fourth quarter outlook, partly because sales slumped after the data breach was first revealed. Sears (SHLD) tumbled by around 13.5 percent. It expects a big quarterly loss as sales fell during the holiday shopping season. Several smaller, specialty retailers also fell: Pacific Sunwear (PSUN) slid 16 percent, Five Below (FIVE) fell 7 percent, Shoe Carnival (SCVL) lost 5 percent, and Conn's (CONN) ! lost 2 pe! rcent. But Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) jumped 12 percent. It raised its earnings forecast as sales were not as bad as expected. Elsewhere, Alcoa (AA) fell about 5.5 percent. It's not quite the economic bellwether it used to be, but the aluminum giant still matters, and its net came in a bit shy of expectations. YRC Worldwide (YRCW) tumbled 13 percent after workers rejected a contract offer. That has raised fears the trucking company could be forced into bankruptcy. On the upside, the weak jobs report could keep mortgage rates from rising, and that boosted housing stocks. KB Homes (KBH) rose 3 percent, William Lyons up 4 percent, and Lennar (LEN) was up 2 percent. And on Thursday we reported that shares of Intercept Pharmaceuticals nearly quadrupled in price on news of a positive clinical study for its liver dr

Mich. cape company turns kids into superheroes

They won't make you more powerful than a locomotive. And you might not be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound in one of their products.

But one Michigan company is moving faster than a speeding bullet — by selling superhero capes.

Livonia-based Superfly Kids makes and sells capes — custom capes, to be exact — for kids and a few adults. And their sales have taken off like, well, Superman.

From 2010 to this year, the company, owned by Holly Bartman and Justin Draplin, has seen its revenues leap from about $260,000 to an estimated $2.4 million. They are expected to double next year.

It all began seven years ago when Bartman's son, Owen, who was turning 4, wanted a superhero party.

"But he didn't want to be Batman or Spider-Man. He wanted to be his own superhero," said Bartman, who taught special education before launching the business.

So, the mild-mannered mom made superhero capes — red ones, blue ones, black ones, all different colors — out of satiny material with lightening bolts and stars on them for the 15 or so kids invited to Owen's birthday party. The kids ran around the backyard, the flowing material trailing them as they went. Other parents and friends were impressed.

Top Sliver Companies To Own In Right Now

One friend told her the capes were so good she should sell them.

A few months later, she did just that.

Bartman, 40, said she initially had no business plan — or any plan at all, really.

Making ca! pes was a hobby. She sold them online to make a little money. Orders would come in. She'd fill them. Then, even more orders would come. After a couple of years, the demand grew so big that she ran out of space in her house.

That's when she started renting space for about $160 a month in a Farmington office building, where she met Draplin, now 33.

Draplin, a fearless entrepreneur who thrives off creating businesses, had a marketing company in the same building. Every morning to get into his office, he had to step over material Bartman had rolled out in the hall to cut for her capes.

Curious, Draplin asked her what she was doing. She told him she was in the superhero business.

"At first, I thought there was no way she could make money selling capes," he said. "I couldn't wrap my brain around it."

But later, he did some calculations. He estimated there are about 30 million kids age 7 and younger in the U.S. If they all wanted capes, which Superfly sells at about $30 each, the market could be huge — $900 million.

So in 2009 Draplin went into business with Bartman.

Up, up and away

Bartman was more interested in designing and making the capes than selling them. She welcomed the partnership.

Draplin bought capes from Bartman and resold them through his own website.

After a few weeks, the two entrepreneurs decided to combine their businesses and the enterprise grew even faster. The duo have moved and expanded 10 times. They now work from a 7,600-square-foot factory in Livonia, and the company has 18 employees. They playfully answer the phone: "How can I save your day?"

Inc. Magazine ranked Superfly Kids the second fastest-growing private company in Michigan, and 227th fastest in the U.S., by revenues in the past three years. The magazine ranked it behind Marketplace Homes, also in Livonia, and ahead of LinTech Global, a software consulting firm in Farmington Hills.

However, the owners acknowledge they made their first big mistake earlier this year when they overestimated how much they would sell in an online promotion. They were left with too much inventory. As a result, they expect their annual sales to be flat this year compared with 2012.

The owners also concluded that to continue growing, they need to open new channels — not just online — to sell to customers.

Despite the super growth curve, the decisions Bartman and Draplin make next likely will be the most challenging, and perhaps scariest, of their partnership.

"It's a critical point in the company, and they have to explore whether they want to bring it to the next level," said Julie Gustafson, executive director of the Macomb-Oakland University INCubator in Sterling Heights. "If they make the wrong decisions, there's a chance of failure."

'A lot of fun'

In many ways, Bartman and Draplin said, they are a good team.

Bartman said she tends to focus on the products and quality control — and takes a slow and steady approach. Draplin wants to grow the company as fast and as big as he can. He calls himself a spaghetti thrower, trying a lot of ideas to see which ones stick.

In addition to capes, the company sells superhero cuffs and masks, T-shirts, tutus, belts, crowns and stuffed toys. It has created its own comic book. (Characters in the book are named Owen, Lily and JJ.)

Superfly Kids even sells a line of adult-sized capes that can be customized with corporate logos. Their merchandise is made in the Livonia plant.

Draplin said he wants to broaden both their product lines and d! istributi! on to reach more retailers. He also has contemplated multilevel sales techniques similar to those of Amway and Mary Kay cosmetics.

To expand even quicker, they are considering whether to seek outside investors, which could require relinquishing control of the enterprise.

"I never thought I'd be doing this for a living," Draplin said. "This is a lot of fun."

As far as natural gas goes and (UNG). We had an incredible late cold winter and 30% rally in prices during March and April, which we caught as well as a 20-25% break in summer prices. At times, the summer has been hot. For now, we may be range bound the next few months, due to more bearish weather coming up, with cooler weather again at times and no hurricanes. On the other hand, lower rig counts and natural gas being the more favored fuel versus coal, when prices fall below $3.30, are the only friendly arguments I see. Longer term, the development of further infrastructure to export LNG could be a bullish development for natural gas, but is still a long ways off. For now, I expect modest rallies in natural gas, if we have them, to be met with selling heading into September.

Top Heal Care Companies For 2014

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA  ) has issued a partial recall of its Model S, with CEO Elon Musk saying in ablogpost today that it involves a possible defect in a mounting bracket on the second row seat.

Musk said the "attachmentstrength of the mounting bracket for the left hand latch of the second row seat could be weaker than intended. This reduces our confidence that the left hand seat back will be properly retained in the event of a crash." The recall includes Model S vehicles manufactured between May 10, and June 8, 2013.

According to the blog post, the Model S backseat attachment is both bonded and welded, but the company discovered that after body side alignment adjustments had been made, the bond was "compromised" and the welding was "weakened in some cars."

Musk went on to say that the weld has not detached on any car, there have been no customer complaints, and Tesla is not aware of any injuries or "near injuries" as a result. Tesla discovered the problem on its own and said no regulatory agency had brought the issue to its attention. A post on a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration site says 1,228 vehicles are affected.
