Google reported a profit of nearly $3 billion during the third quarter, up 36% from a year earlier and exceeding estimates. The jump put Google above the stock's all-time closing high of $924.69 on July 15.

Alamy Late last month, Chinese hardware giant Lenovo (LNVGY) was the subject of many headlines -- not all of them complimentary -- when it signed a high-profile deal to buy the Motorola Mobility smartphone unit from Google (GOOG). The Asian firm is ponying up a cool $2.9 billion to acquire the business, which is monstrously unprofitable to the tune of a $645 million operating loss in the first nine months of 2013. The market didn't appreciate this. Disturbed by the idea of gallons of red ink spilling from Motorola Mobility onto Lenovo's results, investors traded down the firm's stock by as much as 14 percent after the deal was made public. This might have been compounded by the firm's previous announcement, made only days earlier, that it was spending $2.3 billion to purchase IBM's (IBM) x86 -- read: lower-end -- line of servers. Was such a sell-off, in reaction to either or both, justified? At Home Abroad Lenovo is one of those companies that likes to expand by acquisition. Few Westerners had ever heard of the IT manufacturer in 2005 when it closed its first big buy -- the personal computing division of IBM, for total consideration of around $1.75 billion. The purchase seemed a counterintuitive move when everyone knew that a future stuffed with wireless Internet and portable computing was just around the corner. But guess what? Lenovo not only sold plenty of notebooks and desktops, it managed to grow into the top PC manufacturer in the world. According to figures from Gartner (IT), in Q4 2013 the company was the clear market leader in terms of PC vendor unit shipments. It moved nearly 15 million PCs during the quarter, a figure 6.6 percent higher than in the same period the previous year. This was particularly impressive considering that total shipments for the industry dropped by almost 7 percent over that time frame. Lenovo was able to do this because, for most of its life, it's made big strides in less affluent markets and is continuing to do so. In

Allegion will not only benefit from all this growth - we believe it will advance at a faster rate than the market... for four key reasons:

A Tighter Strategic Focus: Companies like Abbott or Ingersoll-Rand break themselves up for several reasons. But a key one is strategic focus. As an independent entity, Allegion will be able to make long-term decisions that provide maximum benefits to itself - instead of having to craft strategies that also benefit the "parent." The newly independent firm can devote more money to research and development, to marketing, and to purchases of technology or product lines. For spin-off companies, this new reality generally leads to a tighter, value-maximizing focus - and faster growth than would otherwise have been possible. More Attention to Shareholders: Allegion will improve its strategic focus as a result of the spin-off. And it will be free to focus on its shareholders, too. The company already announced a $200 million stock buyback and has established a modest dividend. Expect more of the same as the company grows in both size and stature. A Less-Confusing Competitive Situation: When Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG) announced it was dumping its Motorola handset business in a deal with China's Lenovo Inc. (OTC ADR: LNVGY) last month, it was partly because the search giant didn't want to be in the manufacturing business. But there was another reality at play here: By selling handsets, Google was actually competing with the same companies that use its Android operating system. In other words, it was competing with some of its customers. That's why a spin-off firm often benefits from additional business once it's freed from its parent: Once independent, it's much easier to grab business from rivals of its former parent. You can bet that Allegion will see some incremental growth for this very same reason. Building Through Buyouts: Now freed from Ingersoll-Rand, Allegion will be free to do d

Of course, banks can't know when an attack is merely disruptive, and when it may be covering for criminal activity. Security company Symantec (NASDAQ: SYMC  ) has commented that these assaults have become a way for hackers to distract banks while funds are illegally withdrawn. Though most of the thefts have occurred in Europe, where attacks have progressed from website outages to actual bank heists, at least one U.S. bank, Citigroup, disclosed some losses due to cyber thievery earlier this year.

Judith Collins/Alamy WASHINGTON - Home improvement retailer Home Depot (HD) has been in contact with the U.S. Secret Service about an alleged major breach of customer and credit card data that came to light this week, a law enforcement source told Reuters on Thursday. Any investigation by the Secret Service appears to be at a very early stage, the source said. The Secret Service, which declined comment, usually is the lead agency in federal criminal investigations into complex breaches of credit card and other consumer data. Another law enforcement source said the FBI, which also sometimes participates in such investigations, doesn't appear to be involved. It is unclear whether the U.S. Department of Justice is playing any role. Customer data could have been stolen from nearly all of Home Depot's 2,200 stores in the United States, according to information released Wednesday by security blog Krebs on Security. Home Depot hasn't confirmed that a breach occurred and it remains unclear whether or how many customers were impacted. If confirmed, the Home Depot incident could be among the most widespread in the string of security breaches at U.S. retailers in the recent past. Spokeswoman Paula Drake said Wednesday that the retailer is working with IT security firms, including Symantec (SYMC) and FishNet Security, to investigate whether there has been a data breach. A Symantec spokeswoman confirmed that Symantec was assisting with the investigation but didn't elaborate. Home Depot sought to comfort its consumers, promising free identity-protection services, including credit monitoring, to any potentially impacted customers and reassuring that the retailer or the banks that issued the cards will be responsible for any fraudulent charges. Home Depot shares were up 1.6 percent at $90.39 Thursday morning on the New York Stock Exchange. Concerns about a potential Home Depot data theft follow a major breach at retailer Target (TGT), where hackers late last yea

BOSTON -- Cybersecurity company FireEye has acquired Mandiant, the computer forensics specialist best known for unveiling a secretive Chinese military unit believed to be behind a series of hacking attacks on U.S. companies. FirEye (FEYE) shares jumped more than 20 percent after Thursday's announcement of the $1.05 billion cash-and-stock deal, which FireEye said closed Monday. It unites two companies with relatively new technologies for thwarting cyber attacks, and brings together two of the most-respected executives in the security industry: FireEye CEO Dave DeWalt and Mandiant founder Kevin Mandia. While sales of older anti-virus products have been on the decline, security experts expect strong growth in both FireEye's cloud-based systems for detecting malicious software and Mandiant's software that analyzes cyber attacks. About a year ago the two companies entered into a technology development agreement that made it easier to deploy their products together. With the merger, FireEye will gain Mandiant's team of forensics investigators. "They have these very strong Navy 'cyber' Seals who respond to breaches and are very good at what they do," DeWalt said about Mandiant. He had previously served as chairman of Mandiant's board. "My aim is to create the strongest security company in the world," DeWalt said in an interview. FireEye, which has yet to post a profit, said the acquisition will be immediately accretive to earnings and expects the combined company's revenue to grow about 50 percent this year. In comparison, Symantec (SYMC), the biggest maker of anti-virus software, has said it expects fiscal 2014 revenue to drop 3 percent to 4 percent. Mandiant is best known for its forensics services. The company rose to prominence in February 2013 when it pu

Pat Greenhouse/The Boston Globe via Getty ImagesDan O'Malley, CEO of PerkStreet Financial PerkStreet Financial, an innovative online bank that offered rewards "perks" to its users, announced Monday that it was shutting down after failing to secure much-need funding. "Over the last 6 months we have been pursuing additional investment to grow our business to the point it could be self-sustaining," the company wrote in an email to customers that was also posted on its website. "Unfortunately, we were unable to secure more funding and now must begin the process of closing the company." PerkStreet was founded by former Capital One executive Dan O'Malley in 2008, but it really rose to prominence in 2011, when large banks started responding to consumer-friendly financial reforms by heaping new fees on their bank accounts. When Bank of America announced that it would introduce a debit card usage fee (a plan it later scrapped), PerkStreet saw twice as many new customers sign up the next day as usual. That's because it reversed the usual customer-bank relationship: Not only did it not charge account maintenance fees, it actually offered rewards for customers. If you had more than $5,000 in your account, you got 2% cash-back for using its debit card; balances below that threshold got 1% cash back. Like many rewards credit cards, it also had rotating categories offering 5% cash-back. But last year, it started to change how it rewarded account holders: It did away with the $5,000 account threshold and said that all customers, regardless of balance, would get 1% cash-back on most purchases and 2% back at select retailers, including Amazon (AMZN) and Target (TGT). At the time, it said that it was doing so because most account holders weren't maintaining balances above the threshold. As attractive as the deal was, it looks like PerkStreet just didn't have a sustainable business model. The company said Monday that it will officially cease operations on Sept. 26. The good

Moviestore collection Ltd./AlamyA sequel to "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" is coming to Netflix and IMAX. There were plenty of winners and losers this week, with the world's leading online auctioneer revealing long-overdue plans to separate into two companies and the top dog in single-cup coffee brewers taking another legal hit for questionable technology. Here's a rundown of the week's best and worst. Tesla (TSLA) -- Winner The self-driving car may be here sooner than you think. Tesla CEO Elon Musk turned heads this week after an excerpt from a CNNMoney interview showed him promising that a Tesla that can drive itself 90 percent of the time will be available as early as next year. Musk also tweeted about a car that the company will unveil next Thursday -- along with other potential announcements. Tesla cars are as expensive as Tesla stock, but it's hard to find an automaker raising the bar the way that Musk's futuristic company is doing. Pimco -- Loser It's been a week since mutual fund manager Pimco saw Bill Gross -- the legendary bond fund manager who made the Pimco Total Return Fund (PTTRX) a household name with more than $200 billion in assets -- announce that he was leaving for a new gig at fund rival Janus. Now we're seeing the fallout. Days ago, we learned that a record $23.5 billion was withdrawn from the fund in September. It's not just the retail investors who are clearing out now that the longtime manager has moved on. Reports on Thursday said Schwab (SCHW) was dropping the fund from its target-date funds, which aim to craft dynamic asset strategies that evolve based on a certain retirement year. Netflix (NFLX) -- Winner The world's leading premium streaming service has become even more of a juggernaut since rolling out original shows, and now it's taking that strategy to the movies. Netflix revealed this week that it's bankrolling the "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" sequel, making it available to Netflix subscribers at the same time that
