After selling about $10.8 billion in assets throughout 2012, it looks as though Chesapeake Energy (NYSE: CHK  ) is on track for more big sales in 2013. The company just announced this week that it plans to sell 98,000 acres in the Utica shale region of Ohio. Once the sale is completed, it will be the third large influx of capital this year, after the company inked $3.2 billion in joint ventures with Sinopec (NYSE: SHI  ) and Total (NYSE: TOT  ) this year.

Much of the reason for Statoil's weakness over the past year comes from a simple fact of geography. Investors have been extremely nervous about instability in the eurozone, and even though oil giants including France's Total (NYSE: TOT  ) , Italy's Eni (NYSE: E  ) , and Norway's Statoil all own energy properties located around the world, their shares have nevertheless traded as though they were overly exposed to their home markets. Moreover, Norway is among the most stable of Europe's national economies, making the cheap valuations even more ridiculous.

    Lesson learned
The financial situation at Amyris is less than enviable. Whereas fellow industrial biotech company Solazyme has hit every major milestone and had no problem raising funds, Amyris has had to take the more dilutive route for shareholders. Still, large commercial partners Total (NYSE: TOT  ) and Cosan (NYSE: CZZ  ) haven't backed down in their support of the company. Total upped its investment in Amyris during several rough patches in the past year after incurring significant paper losses on the roughly 20% stake in the company. Total even has its own webpage for the partnership, which speaks to its long-term vision for Amyris' platform, especially in renewable diesel.

Investors initially shaved about $5 billion off of Anadarko’s market cap, but about $2 billion of that was restored in subsequent trading sessions. Were it not for the environmental liability, Anadarko would be near the top of my list of E&Ps to own. But I have a tendency to avoid companies with large liabilities hanging over them. That’s why to this day I still won’t recommend BP (NYSE: BP), even though by many metrics it’s quite undervalued.
