Top 10 Healthcare Technology Stocks To Buy Right Now

Have you heard the one about the Internet fund that afraid of dot-coms?

It sounds like a bad money manager joke, but that actually the best way to describe the Kinetics Internet Fund. ruthfully, if we changed the name, we probably get more money, says cofounder and portfolio manager Peter Doyle, jacket slung over a chair in a conference room at his midtown Manhattan office.

Doyle quip has two meanings: His Internet Fund was once the darling of Wall Streetne of the top-performing mutual funds of 1998 and 1999. But it crashed and burned a lot of investors, falling from $1.4 billion in assets in early 2000 to as low as $188 million by 2002.

But Doyle is not just referring to his fund lingering tech-bubble tainte also speaking about his alternative approach.

Despite its seemingly self-evident name and legacy as the first ever Internet-focused mutual fund, there aren many websites left in Doyle 56-company portfolio today. Instead Doyle is proving that in the current bubbly environment for stocks of social networks and mobile apps, the best way to make money from the Net is old-fashioned: value stocks with long product life cycles, deep content libraries, ample cash flownd ideally a billionaire behind the wheel.

Why 2017 Could Be a Bust Year For Residential Solar

You may not see it if you're watching the explosive growth of companies like SolarCity (NASDAQ: SCTY  ) and Vivint Solar (NYSE: VSLR  ) , who are doubling and tripling installations respectively each year, but the U.S. solar industry may be in for a rough 3-5 year stretch.

Solar energy has long been a series of booms and busts, as subsidies come and go in countries around the world, and the U.S. bust could come in 2017 when the investment tax credit, or ITC, expires. It may impact these companies more than you think, particularly those growing quickly into the residential solar market.

Whole communities have started to go solar. Image source: SunPower.

What is the ITC?
The ITC is simply a tax credit for 30% of the cost of installing a solar system. For example, if you install a $10,000 solar system this year, you can reduce your tax liability by $3,000 with the ITC.

The ITC has helped all solar installers, but it's been particularly useful for residential solar companies. Most homeowners don't have enough tax liability to write off a $10,000 or $20,000 ITC credit, making sales difficult, so they bundle the system into a lease for the homeowner and sell the tax benefits to investors, known as tax equity investors. This model has been incredibly successful for SolarCity and Vivint Solar, in particular.

The year 2017 is key because the ITC expires at the end of 2016, meaning 2017 could see a huge drop in solar installations.

SolarCity's growing workforce may have a harder time filling the hours in 2017. Image source: SolarCity.

Why this is a huge deal in residential solar
This will have a bigger impact in residential solar than other parts of the business because residential systems are more expensive than large systems and companies have stretched the value created from the ITC.

Let's take SolarCity as an example. According to their third-quarter earnings release, SolarCity's total cost to install a residential solar system is $2.90 per watt, so a typical 5 kW system costs them about $14,500. But for the purposes of the ITC, they value the system at what they might sell it for to a homeowner. In the third-quarter earnings presentation they predicted selling systems for $4.35 to $5.60 per watt. Using the midpoint of this range, let's assume that SolarCity says a 5 kW system is worth $24,875, or $4.98 per watt, when it applies for the ITC.

For the purposes of the ITC, SolarCity is assuming a $7,462.50 tax credit with the higher valuation rather than $4,350 if they just used their actual cost to calculate the ITC.

This is key because the tax credit is a near-term cash flow for the investor who owns the solar system, and when the ITC expires, that cash flow will go to $0. And this is a big initial cash flow. In the example above, the $7,462.50 that SolarCity may be writing off is over half of the cost of the solar system in the first place.

The early cash flows of the ITC reduces risk for SolarCity dramatically and has a result of lowering the down payment needed, lowering lease power rates, and bringing break-even cash flow forward -- down to just a few years.

What happens when the ITC expires?
The question in 2017 is: Who absorbs the higher cost if the ITC expires? Customers aren't likely to take on more costs versus what a solar system costs in 2016, so the burden likely falls on solar installers. To keep their businesses going, SolarCity, Vivint Solar, and even SunPower, who is the most diverse of the large residential solar companies, will have to reduce margins here in the U.S.

Cost reductions will help ease some of the burden, but I would be shocked if 2017 didn't see a drop in U.S. solar installations, particularly on the residential side. For companies used to doubling year after year, struggling to keep the number of MW installed from declining will be a reality.

The ITC is a huge subsidy that's likely going away given the political climate in Washington, D.C., and if it does, solar system costs will effectively rise 50% or more overnight. That could be a big drag for solar companies focused solely on the U.S., something all investors should be aware of.

You can find many examples of this phenomenon recently:

Late last month, Pitney Bowes (NYSE: PBI  ) cut its dividend in half after announcing worse-than-expected sales and income. The stock had suffered from weakness in Pitney Bowes' core mailing and enterprise business solutions segments, and the company chose to sacrifi! ce its former double-digit yield in order to shore up its financial condition. Even after the cut, the stock still yields a fairly high 5%. In February, CenturyLink (NYSE: CTL  ) cut its dividend by about 25%, again after reporting weak guidance for its earnings for the remainder of 2013. Even though the rural telecom company chose simply to put cash previously earmarked to pay its former yield of 7% toward share buybacks instead, the stock plunged more than 20% in response to the move, although it has rebounded significantly since then as investors recognized the fundamental benefits to the company from the capital reallocation. Until three months ago, Cliffs Natural Resources (NYSE: CLF  ) had a high dividend yield approaching 7% despite terrible conditions in its iron-ore and metallurgical-coal businesses. After announcing earnings in mid-February, the company cut its dividend by more than three-quarters in a move that will conserve cash for the ailing producer of raw materials for steel production. Now, the stock yields just 2.6%.

That's not to say that all of the highest dividend paying stocks are doomed to reduce their payouts. Businesses that are designed to focus on maximizing cash flow rather than seeking growth can often sustain very high yields for years. Vanguard High Dividend Yield (NYSEMKT: VYM  ) and other dividend ETFs use a combination of factors beyond simple yield to choose stocks with sustainable high payouts.

Top 10 Logistics Stocks To Own For 2014

A recent survey by National Retail Systems, or NRS, a privately owned third-party logistics company, reveals interesting insights into truck drivers' job preferences, including answers to key questions like what attracts them to a job and what compels them to leave one. The results could come in handy for American trucking companies that have been spending sleepless nights trying to figure out the best ways to recruit and retain drivers even as the industry battles a severe workforce shortage. It turns out that drivers don't really care about a company's reputation as long as they get a hefty paycheck, and that a sign-on bonus fails to do what it's meant to do: attract drivers. Here are some interesting highlights from the survey.

Building a loyal team is possible
If you think truck drivers are frequent job-hoppers, you might be surprised by what the NRS found out: Out of the thousands of drivers that it surveyed, nearly 47% have either been at the same job or have changed jobs only once over the past 10 years. Yes, loyalty runs high among truck drivers.

    Keeping it simple
Even though retirement planning can get complicated in a hurry, the key to remember throughout much of your career is that it's impossible to plan for every contingency you'll face. As a result, the simpler way to handle planning for retirement is to address the threats that you can control while maintaining as much flexibility as possible to handle the threats you can't control -- or might not even be aware of. A few examples include:

Some advisors will suggest that you're giving up big potential returns if you don't pick individual stocks. But a portfolio that relies on the broad-based ETFs Vanguard Total Stock Market (NYSEMKT: VTI  ) , iShares Core Bond Market (NYSEMKT: AGG  ) , Vanguard REIT (NYSEMKT: VNQ  ) , or other similar ETFs from other fund companies will get you most of the way to the returns that you need in order to retire comfortably. These three ETFs are particularly useful because they come with low fees, but as long as the ETF you choose doesn't charge too much, there are plenty of strong options to pick from. Insurance coverage can be extremely difficult to understand, and the costs involved can be high. Sticking with basic insurance early on and later adding features as you become more familiar with the risks involved might not always be the least expensive solution to your insurance needs, as in some cases, the earlier you get coverage, the less it costs. Moreover, you won't always qualify to get insurance if some event occurs later in life that boosts your risk to the point at which insurance companies won't offer you coverage at all. But the wait-and-see strategy does have the benefit of preventing you from getting coverage that might well be obsolete or unnecessary by the time you seek to use it.

Admittedly, these simple solutions won't always take care of every contingency, and they can leave you vulnerable to certain risks that require advanced planning techniques. But

Advisors' Opinion:

One way Yamana has kept its competitive cost advantage is through extensive sales of base-metal byproducts like copper and zinc, as both it and fellow low-cost rival Goldcorp (NYSE: GG  ) benefit from utilizing those secondary metals to offset the cost of their gold production. Peers Gold Fields (NYSE: GFI  ) and AngloGold Ashanti (NYSE: AU  ) , on the other hand, face much higher costs in part because of their exposure to South Africa and its unstable labor market.

  • [By Brianna Valleskey]

The result is that gold producers are not a particularly exciting part of markets in South Africa anymore, Theron said. Most of the large gold companies, like AngloGold Ashanti Limited (NYSE: AU) and Gold Fields Limited (NYSE: GFI), have internationalized their operations, he said, but still have a footprint in South Africa.

Furthermore, several events have transpired that have made me more confident in my position that Barrick Gold should be avoided by investors in gold mining companies and perhaps shorted as a hedge against a long gold portfolio.

The company's development of its Pascua Lama project in Chile is delayed after the court of appeals ruled that "the company must complete Pascua-Lama's water management system in compliance with the project's environmental permit to the satisfaction of Chile's Superintendence of the Environment (Superintendencia del Medio Ambiente or "SMA") before resuming construction activities in Chile."The company sold its Barrick Energy Inc. subsidiary for roughly $455 million Canadian. It took a write-down of $500 million in the second quarter because it carried Barrick Energy on its books for nearly $1 billion. The company sold its Yilgarn South Assets to Gold Fields (GFI) for $300 million. The company slashed its dividend to $0.05 per share per quarter from $0.20 per share per quarter.

As I hope to demonstrate the first three events are very telling of the company's inability to manage shareholders' capital (the fourth is a natural consequence of this). Ultimately one can question the alignment between shareholders' interests and management, and that a long position in Barrick Gold shares cannot be justified.

Mining companies are most likely to report Cash Operating Costs or Total Cash Costs, except for Gold Fields (GFI), who invented their own cost measure called Notional Cash Expenditure (NCE) in 2008. Presently an industry group is working on the definition of a new cost measure with a work-in-progress name of All-In-Sustaining-Costs or AISC. This is not an entirely new concept since many analysts have been using a similar measure for their work. Various gold mining companies including most majors have started to report their costs as AISC preempting the release of the new standard.

Another stock that looks ready to trigger a near-term trade is CBOE Holdings (CBOE), which is engaged in the trading of options on individual equities, market indexes and exchange-traded funds. This stock has been on fire so far in 2013, with shares up sharply by 56%.

If you take a look at the chart for CBOE Holdings, you'll notice that this stock recently formed a triple bottom chart pattern at $44.44, $44.58 and $44.86 a share. Following that bottom, shares of CBOE have started to uptrend modestly and move within range of taking out some key near-term overhead resistance levels.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in CBOE if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $46.98 a share and then once it takes out its 50-day moving average of $46.98 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 612,798 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then CBOE will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $49.59 a share to its 52-week high at $51.12 a share. Any high-volume move above $51.12 will then give CBOE a chance to tag $60 to $65 a share.

Traders can look to buy CBOE off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below $44 a share. One could also buy CBOE off strength once it takes out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Geoff Gannon] street costs $80.27 a share. So $100 will buy you 1.25 shares of Dun & Bradstreet. Dun & Bradstreet has $5.29 in earnings per share. So, 1.25 shares would deliver $6.61 a share in earnings. We can think of $6.61 a share in earnings as the amount of present earnings your $100 can buy you in Dun & Bradstreet stock.

Coach grew revenue per share 20% over the last five years. While Dun & Bradstreet grew revenue per share 9% a year over the last five years.

Let imagine just for the sake of argument what would happen if Dun & Bradstreet and Coach both grew their earnings for the next five years at the same pace they grew them over the last five years.

This is how much earnings my same $100 would buy in each stock:

    Coach (COH) Dun & Bradstreet (DNB) Today $4.39 $6.61 2012 $5.27 $7.20 2013 $6.32 $7.85 2014 $7.59 $8.56 2015 $9.11 $9.33 2016 $10.93 $10.17

In four years, my $100 investment in Coach would be earning nearly the same amount per year as my $100 investment in Dun & Bradstreet. And in five years, Coach earnings would pass Dun & Bradstreet earnings.

If Coach growth prospects still looked good in five years, the stock might have a P/E of 20. Meanwhile, Dun & Bradstreet growth might still be barely inching along. Actual sales growth at DNB is only around 3% a year. The per share growth is due to constant share buybacks. Check out Dun & Bradstreet 10-year financial summary for evidence of the mammoth stock buyback theye done over the last decade. Shares outstanding have declined almost 40%.

Anyway, if DNB organic sales growth was around 3% or so five years from now the stock could easily have a P/E of 12. So, you could certainly imagine a scenario five years from now where Coach price per share is $219 ($10.93 * 20) while Dun & Bradstreet stock price is only $122 ($10.17 * 12).

I can argue with that. It certainly possible. Personally, I not at all sure a P/
